Many believe that with all the natural disasters of late – earthquakes, tsunamis, floods – plus wars and other man-made catastrophes, that the end of the world is near. Many of the religious believe that judgement day is tomorrow, May 21.

Harold Camping, a Christian radio host with Family Radio, has been espousing the idea that the rapture will occur on May 21 – judgement day for all the believers and non-believers, the day when God brings his children up to Heaven and all the rest eventually go to Hell (as the belief goes). The end of the world will come shortly afterward, according to his theory, and the remaining days on Earth won’t be pretty. Some also believe the Mayan calendar predicts the world will end on Dec. 21, 2012.

Simoncelli Promises More Careful

Google’s Chrome OS

We’ve already seen Google’s Chrome OS. Now, it plays nice with USB storage and devices. And finally, there’s hardware you can get your hands on.



When Google announced the OS, all they had to demonstrate the truest form of Chrome OS on was their CR-48 reference prototype, which was never intended for sale. It was attractively minimal, but didn’t pack much of a punch when it came to its guts. Acer and Samsung have stepped in to solve this problem.

Better hardware. Trackpads are now multitouch and don’t suck. Intel Atom processors running at 1.66GHz are now used. Startup time takes eight seconds. And devices now connect to Chrome OS. If you plug in a camera or thumbdrive, you can manage files or play media files. And Chrome OS will now let you run Gmail offline.

May 21 Judgement Day madness

Some guy named Harold Camping, founder of Family Radio Worldwide, has predicted that the Rapture will happen May 21, 2011, and the world will end on that day.

I think I remember seeing something about him last year, in 2010, with that May 21, 2011, date being prined around the place on busstops and the like.


Judgment Day begins and the Rapture on May 21, 2011... The end of the world on October 21, 2011... Are you crazy? You're just another one of those lunatics like Nostradamus or the Mayans who say the apocalypse will be in 2012 and all the other crazy, absurd people who have predicted dates for the end of the world throughout history only to be proven wrong each and every time.

Before PSN Back Up, Consider Changing All Logins

As you will now be well aware the PlayStation Network is down and at the moment Sony is still working to rectify the problem. We previously brought you news that the network was back up in Japan and news about the confusion between hashing and encryption when it comes to passwords.

The news we have for you today comes courtesy of a YouTube video of a formal apology from Sony. It seems the company is recommending that if the login you use for the PSN online is the same for other sites you might be registered with such as online bank and email address for example, you should change it once back online.

One of the reasons for this is because Sony does not know exactly the extent of the breach so in order to be on the safe side and ensure identities and personal details stay private they recommend the change.

Sirius XM Radio Highlight

Sirius XM CEO Mel Karmazin on a conference call highlighted that the user figures make the company one of the largest subscription businesses in the world. He also said that the company would increase its subscriber addition target of 1.4 million for this year if it wasn't for uncertainty following the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, which he said could lead to short-term supply issues for automakers. Karmazin said through April his team hasn't seen any signs of shortfalls.

At the end of the first quarter of 2011, SIRIUS XM had $433.7 million cash and cash equivalents and $2,766.8 million of outstanding debt compared with $586.7 million cash and cash equivalents and $2,891.7 million of outstanding debt at the end of fiscal 2010. At the end of the reported quarter, debt-to-capitalization ratio was 0.90 compared with 0.93 at the end of fiscal 2010.

Karmazin said Sirius XM is expecting to raise its prices if regulators don't extend a three-year price freeze promised as part of the Sirius-XM merger in 2008. That provision expires at the end of July unless the FCC extends it. Sirius XM didn't say when a price increase could kick in and how high it could be, but Karmazin said it would be above inflation levels and help the company amid continued spending on such marquee content as Stern, Oprah Winfrey, the NFL and Major League Baseball.

During the first quarter of 2011, SIRIUS XM generated $18.1 million of cash from operations compared with a cash consumption of $37.7 million in the prior-year quarter. Free cash flow (cash flow from operations less capital expenditures) in the reported quarter was a negative $16.8 million compared with a negative $127.2 million in the year-ago quarter.

Karmazin on Tuesday also touted the subscription revenue the company attracts. He calculated that terrestrial radio giant Clear Channel makes $13.61 per listener per year, while online streaming service Pandora makes up to $4.59 from active listeners. Meanwhile, Sirius XM made $141 per subscriber last year, he said.

Quarterly total revenue of $723.8 million was an improvement of 9% year over year, and slightly below the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $726 million. The year-over-year revenue growth was primarily attributable to an increase in the subscriber base, higher sale of "Best of" programming, and rate increases to the company's multi-subscription and Internet packages.

Quarterly total operating expenses were $559.7 million compared with $538.6 million in the year-ago quarter. Operating income, in the first quarter of 2011, was $164.2 million compared with an operating income of $125.1 million in the year-ago quarter. Quarterly adjusted EBITDA was $181.4 million compared with $157.8 million in the prior-year quarter.
